Sensory boards, often called busy boards, are interactive panels designed to stimulate children’s senses and encourage hands-on exploration. They combine everyday objects, locks, switches, textures, zippers, bells, into a safe, engaging platform that nurtures curiosity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.

When children dig, pour, smear, splash, squeeze, and explore, they’re not “making a mess.” They’re building the neural architecture that supports language, self-regulation, creativity, and problem‑solving. Sensory experiences are one of the most powerful, developmentally aligned ways children make sense of their world.

Early childhood is a busy time – there are so many new objects to look at and touch, sensations to experience and activities to explore. However, adding a sensory component or enhancing the existing sensory features of an activity can help promote attention and engagement. The following article provides strategies and activity ideas for auditory, visual, tactile, oral, and movement sensory stimulation.

In this STEAM project, children will be creating a lemon volcano. These lemon-smelling volcanoes create bubbly small eruptions which you can make in your learning environment with some easily available items in the kitchen.
