Long Service Leave for Early Childhood Educators

Long Service Leave (LSL) is a valuable entitlement that rewards employees for extended service with the same employer. For early childhood educators—who often work in emotionally demanding, relational roles—LSL offers a chance to rest, reflect, and recharge after years of contribution.

What Is Long Service Leave?

According to the Fair Work Ombudsman:

“An employee gets long service leave after a long period of working for the same employer.”

LSL entitlements are governed primarily by state and territory laws, not the national Fair Work Act. These laws outline:

  • How long an employee must work to qualify (typically 7–10 years)
  • How much leave they receive (usually 2 months after 10 years)
  • Whether casuals are eligible (varies by state)

Key Points for Early Childhood Educators

1. LSL Is Based on Continuous Service with One Employer

  • You must work for the same employer for a set period (e.g., 7 years in NSW) to qualify.
  • Changing services—even within the same company—may reset your accrual unless covered by a portable scheme.

2. It Does Not Automatically Transfer Between Services

  • If you move to a new employer, your LSL entitlement typically starts again.
  • Exceptions may apply in states with portable LSL schemes (e.g., VIC for community services workers).

3. Casual Educators May Be Eligible

  • In some states (e.g., NSW, VIC), long-serving casuals can accrue LSL if their employment is regular and continuous.

4. Children’s Services Award [MA000120]

  • This award covers most early childhood educators and outlines entitlements like annual leave and personal leave—but LSL is governed by state law, not the award itself

Where to Get Accurate Information

To check your specific entitlements, visit your state or territory’s LSL authority:

State/Territory LSL Authority

VIC Victorian Wage Inspectorate
QLD QLD Industrial Relations
ACT WorkSafe ACT
WA WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety
SA SafeWork SA
NT NT Government – Employee Relations
TAS Tasmanian Government – Industrial Relations

Sector Relevance

For early childhood educators, LSL supports:

  • Staff well-being and retention
  • Recognition of long-term commitment
  • Planning for extended breaks or transitions

It’s especially important for leaders to:

  • Track staff eligibility
  • Communicate entitlements clearly
  • Embed LSL planning into workforce strategy
