Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me - Free Story On Moon Phases

Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me is a free story for Educators to download and read to young children. It is a story about a young girl named Monica who dreams of playing with the Moon, moon begins to shrink teaching Monica about moon phases.

About The Story

“Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me” by Eric Carle is a charming children’s book that tells the story of a young girl named Monica who dreams of playing with the Moon. She asks her father to get it for her. He climbs a very tall ladder to reach the Moon but discovers that it is too large to bring down. The Moon agrees to shrink, becoming smaller each night until it is small enough for Monica to play with. Eventually, the Moon disappears completely, but Monica watches as it gradually reappears in the sky, teaching her about the lunar phases.

This story beautifully combines themes of imagination, wish-fulfillment, and the natural world, making it a delightful read for young children. The book’s distinctive collage illustrations add to its charm and educational value.

Extension Of Learning Experiences

1. Moon Phases Craft

  • Activity: Use the circular template and sponges dipped in white paint to create the different phases of the moon on the black paper. Discuss how the moon changes shape over time, just like in the story.

2. Story Retelling with Puppets

  • Activity: Encourage children to retell the story using the puppets. This helps with comprehension and narrative skills.

3. Moon Rock Hunt

  • Activity: Paint the rocks to look like moon rocks and hide them around the classroom or playground. Have the children search for them and discuss what they might find on the moon.

4. Ladder Climbing Game

  • Activity: Create a game where children “climb” the ladder to reach the moon, just like Monica’s father. This can be a fun way to incorporate physical activity.

5. Moon Observation Journal

  • Activity: Start a moon observation journal where children can draw the moon each night and note its changes. This can be a great way to connect the story to real-life observations.

6. Moon and Stars Sensory Bin

  • Activity: Create a sensory bin filled with black beans or rice and add glow-in-the-dark stars and moon figurines. Let the children explore and play, discussing what they might find in space.

7. Moon Songs and Rhymes

  • Activity: Sing songs and rhymes about the moon, such as “Hey Diddle Diddle” or “I See the Moon.” This can help reinforce the theme and make learning fun.

8. Moon Story Art

  • Activity: Have the children draw their favorite part of the story. Display their artwork in the classroom and discuss each drawing.

9. Moon Shadow Play

  • Activity: Use flashlights to create shadows of the moon and other space objects on the wall. This can be a fun way to explore light and shadow.

10. Moon Snack Time

  • Activity: Create “moon snacks” by spreading cream cheese on round crackers and sprinkling them with edible glitter. Enjoy the snacks while discussing the story.

These activities can help bring the story to life and deepen children’s understanding of the moon and space.
