The Indigenous Literacy Foundation proudly presents Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday 6th September, celebrating Stories, Cultures and Languages. Take part in a free virtual event including a 15-minute film premiere, followed by a 45-minute live stream from the Sydney Opera House with storytelling and songs. 

Creation stories are mythological tales that describe a cultural or religious group’s beliefs about how the universe including its elements and beings was created. Play School has collaborated with SNAICC, Koori Curriculum, Reconciliation Australia and the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council to create ‘Play School’s Yarning and Dreaming’ available to watch on Thursday 4th August at 9 am.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (Children’s Day) is our national day dedicated to celebrating our children and is celebrated across the country each year on 4 August.

Australia Post is the principal partner of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. They have created the Pen Pal Club teacher guide encouraging children to investigate and share First Nations stories and culture through letter writing.

The National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature has produced a new Resource that celebrates children’s books by and about Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flag Posters have both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. There is also an information page for each flag that includes the meaning of the flags and what each flag represents. These can be displayed within the learning environment.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Songs Posters for children show the lyrics of 3 popular ATSI songs for children. These can be displayed in the learning environment.

Inanay - A Torres Strait Islander song about a goanna in Yorta Yorta, a language of one of Torres Strait Islander tribes in Victoria. Taba Naba- This song is about going to the reef and is accompanied by a sit-down dance where the dancers perform traditional movements corresponding to the lyrics. Pitjantjatjara - 123 - Learn to count to 3 in Pitjantjatjara with this simple song. A dialect of the Western Desert Language, the largest language group of Aboriginal Australia.

This template is for services to share their Acknowledgment of Country with children and can be incorporated into the morning routine. Incorporating a daily Acknowledgement of the Country is important because it encourages children to engage with diversity and respect.

NAIDOC Week 2022 starts from 3 July to 10 July. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
