Affinity Follows G8 Footsteps With CCTV Cameras, Parental Preferences and Introduces Phone Lockboxes For Educators Across Their Centres

In response to deeply troubling allegations against a former educator, Affinity Education has announced sweeping safeguarding reforms across its 250+ centres. These include fast-tracked CCTV installation, parental choice for nappy/toileting care, centre layout reviews to remove blind spots, and mandatory lockboxes for staff phones during work hours.

While these measures aim to restore trust and strengthen accountability, they’ve also ignited vital conversations throughout the early childhood education sector.

Beyond Technology: Rebuilding Trust in Care

Affinity CEO Tim Hickey expressed regret over recent events and pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations. Yet, for many educators and families, the harm has laid bare a deeper need for cultural and systemic change.

A recent survey of 2,100 educators highlights chronic understaffing and breaches of ratio regulations, particularly within for-profit centres. Many respondents reported routine corner-cutting due to pressures around documentation, supervision, and compliance.

Opportunities for Sector-Wide Improvement

These reforms present a chance to critically reflect and recalibrate:
