What would you like to have in a brand new room?

Post by mummaconky » Wed Nov 24, 2010 11:18 pm

If you were given a blank canvas, a room that had never been used before, what essential items would you like to see/have? What would you like to implement, where would you start? What would you avoid?
Would love to hear your thoughts :)

What an interesting question.... Here's what I'd love to do...

1) Using the different interest areas (art n craft, block area, music area, computers etc) partition the room off, according to this. I will also have a different themed back drops on the wall at each of the interest areas... For e.g in music area I will have a back drop of cartoon kids dancing together and playing musical instruments...etc...

2) In home corner, I'd love to provide a stage, a wooden tree house and a puppet theatre, along with a variety of dress ups, full length mirrors, wigs, etc... (the list can go on and on)...

3) Art n craft area... I would love to incorporate an art gallery for the children to display their artistic creations.

4) In book corner...I would love to make it into a big tent that the kids could go inside (like a mini version of a circus tent). I would have book shelves in the tent, for the children to have access to books as well as cushions, soft toys etc...

5) I would also like to have a kitchen area that is accessible for the kids... with an oven (attached up high) so we can incorporate cooking activities etc into the program...

I saw this really cool thing at a childcare centre once and if I had the money and the space I would seriously do it...

They had a separate art n craft room for the kids. The cool thing about it was, one half of the wall was filled with glow in the dark paints and in the ceiling there was blue lights installed. So when, they turned off the lights and switched on the blue lights, the whole art n craft room became this big glow in the dark painting area...it was magical...

At that time, they also had canvases on the wall, the kids were given a variety of tools to use (such as spray bottles with food colouring, balloons filled with food colouring, balls dipped in paint) to throw at the canvases, to create their art.

The centre would have an auction night, once a year with the families and auction the artwork that the kids did throughout the year, to buy toys, materials, furniture etc for the centre.

It is definitely something different that's for sure.

It's important to have plenty of shelving that the kids can have access to and would prefer to have natural materials (wooden tables and chairs, cane baskets etc, wooden shelving etc). I hate the plastic stuff we get stuck using now.

Also I wanna develop a science and nature area that the kids could discover for themselves... for example and indoor garden with real plants, growing vegetables, flowers, hanging plants etc...Like a green house, gosh the room will have to be a size of a house...hahahaha

Great ideas thank you for the reply.
It is a very natural environment and no plastic will be used for toys or major equipment!! Yay!!! Think vegie patch, chickens, wooden forts, real grass.... Lots of the 'real' stuff!
Will be putting your ideas to management and see what i can get!
Thanks again :)
