unaware injury happened

Post by ellen » Fri Mar 25, 2016 7:19 pm

we had two children who bites, one of them consistently attempts to bite others, last week just bit an educator on her face when he was removed from trying to bite his peers,we are fully occupied with these two children, trying our best to ensure that no others get hurt.
Just last week one parent went to the office that requested that she wnated her child to go back to baby's room because the child went home with a bite mark on her back without any notifying by the staff. Both my assistant and i could not recall that she had cried on that day, because she is generally quite and busy playing with others!
Now the situation is the child is in the baby's room and the person in the office who had the whole story was not working the last two days.

So, what can i do now as a room leader? could someone who has the experience help out, please?very appriciated!

Hi Ellen,
Sometimes these things happen and we don't notice them especially when it is a quiet child. It is really hard when you are run off your feet with situations like this.
Some children don't make a big loud fuss and its hard to know when something happens to them. You can only do the best you can.

It happens. We get busy, we get caught up sometimes we miss things... You will need to put the biting child on a behaviour management plan which basically assists you to come up with suggestions on how to stop this child biting and implement these strategies within the room. The biting child should be "shadowed" throughout the day and observed to figure out when they are most likely to bite e.g. when they want something, during routines, when they are tired. Once you figure this out then you can work out ways to work with the biting child to stop this behaviour. You will need to get the biting child's parents involved as well so they can follow the same strategies at home as well.

In regards to the child who got bitten, you can tell the parents that you apologise that you didn't notice their child was bitten and that you are currently understand their is an issue with biting within the room and you are assisting the child involved to overcome this behaviour. You are also discussing and implementing changes within the room to help children to understand how biting hurts and other methods to use when upset, frustrated, angry etc.

Hope this helps,
