new job anxiety

Post by Neshkah » Sun May 10, 2015 10:29 pm

Hello lovely educators

I'm starting a new job as acting room leader in the babies room, for 2 days a week. The only previous experience ive had is in a different Centre and only as a casual for a year...plus placement for Diploma. I'm very nervous about learning new routines and meeting new staff members. I'm not sure what to expect. Im only starting out my career and I don't feel as though I'd be good enough as a room leader. Please help!

It's OK to feel this way! We all get nervous before starting a new job especially when we are just starting out! Going into a room leader role can make you feel anxious especially for the first time but you've got to start somewhere! You were chosen because you were the best candidate for the job!

First off, introduce yourself to the parents in the room. Tell them what days you'll be working in the room, that you're excited to get to know the children and that you'll work together with the staff to meet each child's individual needs and interests etc. it's probably a good idea to maybe write a note that you can give to each parent within the room you'll be working.

Next off, talk to the staff within the room. Since you're working 2 days maybe you can also meet and correspond with the other room leader. Find out about each child's individual routines as well as the overall room routine. Talk about the program, the experiences planned etc. It's important that you constantly talk to the room staff. They themselves will know the routine quite well and will help you until you find your feet. It shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks for you to get into a routine.

Over the next 2 weeks observe, interact and engage will all staff, children and families within the room. Get to know each individual child, get involved and familiarise yourself with the routines. From there, you can begin " taking charge" so to speak. Since you a job sharing with another room leader I really think it's important that you both stay in contact and keep the communication open between the two of you so you are both on the same page!

Enjoy yourself and smile! You'll get into the swing of things!

Let me know how it goes,
