Creating Welcoming and Providing Support To ATSI Families

Post by kellymm20 » Wed Dec 30, 2015 1:54 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone could have a read over my responses and tell me if im on the right track. Im having a lot of trouble with this assessment as the wording can be a little confusing at times. Thanks

This link may assist in your research: http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p_1 ... points.pdf.

(a) Describe in detail three (3) ways you could create an embracing environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families in your service.

1. We could create an embracing environment by displaying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags It is important that the flags are displayed correctly and appropriately.
2. We could display the ‘Acknowledgment of Country’ that has been personalised to our Centre.
3. We could provide a wide variety of resources such as books, puzzles, musical instruments etc. that provide or reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

(b) Describe in detail three (3) ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and community members could work in partnership with the service.

1. We could Invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to come to our service to participate by sharing their cultural knowledge, helping to make decisions to improve the service, share their language and show us how to use it appropriately and participate in activities that celebrate their culture with staff and children. This will demonstrate that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and beliefs are valued at our Centre.
2. We could connect with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members who may be able to assist with sourcing and selecting culturally appropriate resources.
3. Connect with local support service and community run operations that may assist with providing knowledge, equipment, support etc to come into the service and help in any way. These may include but are not limited to: “The Indigenous Schooling Support Unit (ISSU) library http://education.qld.gov.au/information ... aries/atsi has a comprehensive collection including books, DVDs, puzzles, artefacts, puppets, and toys with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus. Resources can be borrowed for four weeks. Membership is free and open to staff of Education, Training and the Arts, teachers, students and the general public.” (Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People: Starting Points, Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, July 2014, https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p ... points.pdf)

Im also struggling with the following 2 questions.
Part 2.

a) Identify and list six (6) of the communication issues that can impact on effective relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Link: http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p_1 ... nships.pdf

b). Identify and list six (6) strategies appropriate to develop and maintain effective relationships. Please see the following link for further information:

Again, Im getting confused with the wording.

Describe in detail

You may need to include more details in each response.

For example:

1. When the flags (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags) are hung together vertically, it is important that both are rotated in the same direction, that is, so that the bases of the flags face the same way.

2. [Acknowledgement of Country] says … that we accept the fact we are in a place that has a history and story far beyond 220 years. It says to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fellow Australians that we are all in the future journey of our country together.

3. Connecting with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members can assist with sourcing and selecting culturally appropriate resources.

I'm just suggesting these additions because the question said "describe in detail" .

For your following questions, see if the following information may help:

Working and Walking Together

Hope this helps,

Thanks Lorina,

I made some changes and added in some more detail as you suggested and im happy with my answers for that question. Im still struggling with the other one though. I will add it in again and some of my ideas. I did have a look at the link you suggested but seeing as though the question provides me with a link to use, Im assuming the answers are right there in the text. If you could give me some pointers to get me going that would be great. Im feeling a little overwhelmed by this assessment. :(

a) Identify and list six (6) of the communication issues that can impact on effective relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Link: http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p_1 ... nships.pdf

1. Is the answer to this simply the first 6 dot points from the link? Seems a bit too easy....
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

b). Identify and list six (6) strategies appropriate to develop and maintain effective relationships. Please see the following link for further information:
Link: http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p_1 ... nships.pdf

1. Do i have to come up with these myself? Or am I missing the answer in the text?
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

For the first question just like you said, I think you just jot down the points mentioned in the text.

The second link is the same as the first link... SO, I can't find any any further information to add... Maybe you need to come up with it on your own... Also the links at the bottom of the Fact Sheet you provided - links dont work so it isn't very helpful!
