CHCCN303A - Food An Expression Of Well-being, Culture & Beliefs

Post by kitchylady » Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:21 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: CHCCN303A - Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner - Food and Culture
Your Assignment Type: Standard Question
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Basic Knowledge

Your Question?
Give two examples from your own life experience of how food is an expression of our emotional well-being, our culture and beliefs.

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
These are my answers but I am not sure that they appropriately answer the questions as would be required by the course.

a. In Australia I believe we have a bittersweet relationship with food. Due to overindulgence and a decrease in physical activity due to the changing nature of work and reliance on technology our health levels are deteriorating with age. The rates of depression and other mental disorders are rising as are the use of alcohol in young people and early onset of many diseases. This influenced my decision to study Psychology at University. Living in this society I think is very difficult, there are constant reminders of food and unhealthy food is a cheaper and more convenient option especially in rural areas. I know my body reflects the trends here and the pull to diet is immense. This is an issue affecting the western world and culture and if I had an answer for it I think Id be studying something else!

b. Eating meals is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. It wasn’t until I was 18 that I tried pasta amongst other things, in my home we ate a traditional “meat and 3 veg” kind of meal. I had never been introduced to culturally diverse foods, as my dad did not like a huge range of foods, possibly he was resistant to trying it like many children! This in turn though was passed down to me as a child. Pasta is now a staple of my meal repertoire! Now as part of a multicultural society I am proud to eat food with origins from all over the world.

Description and Message:
Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with this question. I am not sure if my answers are appropriate or if I have completely misunderstood the question! Thanks

Interesting question... I've read your responses and I think they answer the question well. I think your responses make sense and it shows the western culture, beliefs and emotional well being...

What you're referring to is true in Western culture. We don't give priority to food or leading a healthy style. It's mainly working and studying. Families are less often spending time on each other and very rarely sit down for a home cooked meal. Everyone always seems so busy and fast food seems like the only option. It's quick and easy. No hassles. Rather than spend an hour cooking, you can buy something to eat within 10 minutes. More time for work and study. That's how the society is.

That's exactly how my life used to be. I'd only eat dinner and throughout the day survive on endless coffee and sometimes a quick snack. Just because I didn't have time during the day to cook. At night times I'd be so exhausted after a 1 hour shift the last thing I wanted to do is cook... So, a couple times a week fast food was best!

I'm an Aussie currently living in India with my in- laws. Where food is very important. I'm having 3 meals a day at regular timings, eating fresh vegetables daily and having family time where we all sit together and eat. There is such a variety of foods here that some of them are even used for medicinal values. So, if your feeling sick instead of taking antibiotics you have a certain type of food which also helps. I've also noticed I'm having a lot of nutrients and my nails and hair grow whereas in Sydney they don't. Lastly I'm vegetarian and there is not a lot of options in Western culture but here the vegetarian cuisines are endless! It's amazing on what you can make with vegetables.

I just wanted to share my thoughts and give you my experience with food,

Hope this hels,

:geek:,
