Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: CHCCN303A - Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner - Food and Culture
Your Assignment Type: Standard Question
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Basic Knowledge
Your Question?
Give two examples from your own life experience of how food is an expression of our emotional well-being, our culture and beliefs.
What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
These are my answers but I am not sure that they appropriately answer the questions as would be required by the course.
a. In Australia I believe we have a bittersweet relationship with food. Due to overindulgence and a decrease in physical activity due to the changing nature of work and reliance on technology our health levels are deteriorating with age. The rates of depression and other mental disorders are rising as are the use of alcohol in young people and early onset of many diseases. This influenced my decision to study Psychology at University. Living in this society I think is very difficult, there are constant reminders of food and unhealthy food is a cheaper and more convenient option especially in rural areas. I know my body reflects the trends here and the pull to diet is immense. This is an issue affecting the western world and culture and if I had an answer for it I think Id be studying something else!
b. Eating meals is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. It wasn’t until I was 18 that I tried pasta amongst other things, in my home we ate a traditional “meat and 3 veg” kind of meal. I had never been introduced to culturally diverse foods, as my dad did not like a huge range of foods, possibly he was resistant to trying it like many children! This in turn though was passed down to me as a child. Pasta is now a staple of my meal repertoire! Now as part of a multicultural society I am proud to eat food with origins from all over the world.
