After Horrendous Violation Of Trust In Childcare Rapist Case, Blue Cards In Scutiny

Following the discovery of serious shortcomings in the case of one of Australia's worst pedophiles, an independent investigation of Queensland's child protection system will be initiated. Under the direction of Luke Twyford from the Child Death Review Committee, the investigation will closely investigate the Blue Card system, which evaluates an individual's suitability to work with children.

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington brought up the murder of Tiahleigh Palmer by her foster father and the "horrific" childcare rapist Ashley Paul Griffith, saying that many parents and families had been disappointed. Premier David Crisafulli emphasized the necessity of drawing attention to what he called a flawed system. In order to identify any weaknesses in the system, the inquiry would ask the Department of Education, the Queensland Police Service, the Australian Federal Police, and other organizations for records and information.

"It comes after the terrible betrayal of trust that occurred with Ashley Paul Griffith, a betrayal that demonstrates how flawed the system is and the necessity of drawing attention to it in order to rectify it," Crisafulli stated. Days after Griffith's legal team declared it would appeal his sentence on the grounds that it was blatantly disproportionate, the announcement was made.

Griffith was found guilty of sexually abusing numerous children while working in daycare centers and was given a life sentence with a 27-year non-parole period. The youngest victim was a one-year-old, and the crimes began in 2003. The efficiency of the Blue Card system was called into doubt when it was discovered after Griffith's arrest that others had previously reported his actions but had failed to apprehend him.

According to Frecklington, Queensland's youngsters had been let down by the previous Labor government's failure to carry on at least 20 of the recommendations made in a 2017 Blue Card study. "One may argue that the previous administration allowed this problem to arise," she stated. "What brings us here today? What we have witnessed is a former administration that disregarded important suggestions made by earlier studies to safeguard society's most vulnerable members—children.
