Issues

Post by Meena Kumar » Fri Apr 15, 2016 11:00 am

Hi

I have been working as a relief educator at a chikdcare centre for 4 months now.
I get called almost daily in different rooms..

The issue the i have is with the nursery staffs. They ask me to do a lott of nappy change. When its their turn they ask me to lift all the heavy babies as they say they have problems with their back. I dont mind all that and i m very happy to help them . But now i feel they need me just to lift heavy babies and do nappies. This made me feel bad like i feel i m not appriciated.. .

There is another part timd permanent working in the same room . She was good to me but now she too uses me to lift heavy babies. And if any staffs find that the child has a poo at any time of the day then it's me who have to change it
In the beginning i dint feel bad..i was happy thinking that they appriciated me but as the day goes by i felt they all have taken a decision to use me as a nappy changer and heavy baby lifter.

Can anyone let me know what are the rights of relief staffs?
How can i address this issue?
Thank you

Hi there thats sad to hear and unfair. Do you feel comfortable talking to the staff about it? If not how about talking to the director? The other thing you can do is when there is a chance try and show case some of your strengths. But ultimately you shouldn't be expected to just go to work to do that all day. I would talk to the staff if you feel comfortable otherwise talk to the director. Also check what your duties are and also the centre policies.

I hope all goes well
Best of luck :)

Hi,
The centre should have a little step ladder or something of the like for the children to climb up onto the change table with your help, no one should be lifting heavy little ones all day. It does sound like they are taking advantage, I have never worked in a centre before but if you don't sort it out it will only get worse.

Yes, Linsaa is right! You will need to get this issue sorted pretty quickly otherwise you will be stuck doing the same thing over and over. If other educators are having issues with their back while lifting the heavy babies why do they expect that you wont sooner or later? You shouldn't have to lift any child and as Linsaa said there should be a step ladder to assist the heavy babies to get up and down the change table.

Even though you are just the casual worker you should be fairly treated and it seems like you are not. So, please let the room leader know or the director so you can just do more than changing nappies and lifting children.

I think you should talk with your CEO or you try to say "NO" in a polite manner with reason

Regarding the step ladder maybe this should be the first request to the Director. No need to talk to the team leader about it because I don't think they will do anything about it. Let the Director know and hopefully they will take you up on the suggestion.
