Guidelines For Types Of Sunscreen To Use

Post by ChelseaF » Wed Feb 10, 2016 11:02 am

Hi all, just wondering if there are guidelines for the brands and types of sunscreen that centres may supply for use on the children who don't bring their own. Until recently our centre has used Cancer Council SPF 30+ or 50+, but there has been some discussion about whether they should switch to a zinc based mineral one.

I notice the cancer council recommends anything that is broad spectrum, water resistant and SPF 30 or more. The natural one is described on its own website as all of these, although I cannot find any evidence based studies conducted in independent labs to confirm its safety or efficacy.

Id appreciate your thoughts on this!

I only found the following from the Cancer Council:

Apply SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen to skin not protected by clothing at least 20 minutes before going outdoors. Reapplication every two hours is essential. Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen so frequent reapplication is important to maintain maximum sun protection. It is recommended that children from about five years of age be encouraged to apply their own sunscreen under supervision. It is important they are given time to develop this skill so they will be ready for independent application at school.

The Australasian College of Dermatologists recommends the use of a sunscreen at any age when there is unavoidable exposure to the sun and states that sunscreen is safe to use on babies(12). Many brands have a gentler baby or toddler formula. Sunscreens with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide reflect UV radiation away from the skin, and are less likely to cause problems with sensitive skin.

Hi ChelseaF,
I am a huge non believer in sunscreen. I know in a centre you don't have a choice though.
When are we supposed to get our vitamin D which is a cancer fighting vitamin.
Does anyone know that since the slip slop slap campaign started in the 80's cancer has increased more than 100 fold? You barely heard of anyone having it in the 80's, I heard on the news the other day that in the next decade 1 out of 2 people will get one form of cancer or another..... it doesn't surprise me when the vitamin that can help us fight it we are blocking from entering our skin.
Just look at the label, all those toxic chemicals we are putting onto our children are they are going straight into their blood streams, blocking their vitamin D intake, its very very scary.
Always wear proper hats, don't play outside in the hot parts of the day, do indoor activities and art and craft sleep and eat during that time, and have a huge outdoor pergola to allow outdoor play not in the direct sun.
Just my opinion
