Baby Room

Post by tiger2 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 8:15 pm

As you may previously know i have just been appointed group leader of the bubs room, so far im loving it and enjoying it. Unfortunately I have just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant and i do not know the complications or risks involve with working with this age group and if i should continue or limit what i am doing? And how should i approach the director and when i should tell her officially, i'm waiting until 3 months to tell family and friends. Thank you so much for the advice

Congratulations! How exciting! What great news! So, since you're waiting three months to tell your family and friends I guess we're the first to know! Yay!

Got a bit carried away there..LOL..Back to your question...

There is a risk of contacting CMV (Cytomegalovirus) which you can get when you're changing nappies. Almost anyone can get it but it's extremely harmful for pregnant woman and may cause a lot of serious complications for you and the baby.

There has been a topic discussed in the forum of this particular virus for educators working while pregnant. You can have a read through the topic here:

CMV Risks - Working While Pregnant

I understand you would like to wait 3 months before making the announcement but I would recommend at least letting your director know so they are aware and make the necessary changes. You should not be changing nappies at all (wearing gloves or even washing your hands twice before and after nappy changes doesn't make a difference), even as early as you are at 5 weeks you just don't want to risk it.

You should also avoid heavy lifting and putting any type of pressure on your tummy. It's very difficult since you are working in the nursery and you need to comfort children by lifting and holding them but you need to minimise this as much as possible.

Have a chat with your director and see what arrangement you can work out....

Congratulations once again!!
