Yeshi, a recent arrival from Ethiopia, has three children enrolled at the service. The family’s first language is Amharic and they also speak Arabic.
Yeshi tells you that her older son Dejen (7.8yrs) now refuses to speak Amharic at home. He has told his mother that they must all speak English because they are now Australians. Yeshi wants the children to retain their native language as well as learn English. She asks you for advice.
What information could you provide Yeshi about the importance of retaining the home language.?
