Assisting Katherine To Settle Into Care

b. What strategies would you implement to assist Katherine and her family to settle into care? Include any actions you would carry out prior to Katherine starting as well as actions you may complete on her first day? How do your responses comply with the quality standards from the National Quality Framework? You should identify at least five strategies.

this is what I have so far:
Some Practical strategies to help assist Amanda settle Katherine into care:

- Let Amanda know the centre has an open-door policy so that she always feel welcome to visit if she is able.
- Encourage Amanda to phone throughout the day to check on Katherine (or perhaps offer suggestions of good times to call).
- Ask Amanda about Katherine’s likes and dislikes and how she settle’s her when she is distressed at home.
- Ask Amanda for her parental input into the program.
- Guide parents as they settle their children for the day by having them participate in a consistent routine or ritual. This will help the child feel more secure and will also help the parent get more involved in the service. This may include nappy change for the younger children or interacting with a favourite experience, reading a book or completing a puzzle for the older children. This would be a good thing to set up with Amanda prior to Katherine starting so that they can establish a consistent routine from Katherine’s very first day.
- As Amanda and Katherine arrive always greet both the parent and the child by name. We can then initiate a 3-way interaction where we can share information about Katherine with Amanda as well as making eye contact and smiling at the young child. At this point a transitional object may be used to comfort the child and ease the transition.
- An orientation program to Amanda so that they can visit the centre prior to starting care officially. This will diminish fears of the unknown and build up familiarity whilst creating a sense of belonging for both Katherine and Amanda. Let Amanda know she is more than welcome to visit as often as she would like to help Katherine become comfortable and familiar with the centre before starting.

Yes, you're strategies are good! In this scenario doesn't Katherine have a brother in another room (if I remember correctly). You could also encourage the brother to come and see Katherine at various times throughout the day...
