Pay, hours & new words: Questions from Newbie

Post by Giitara » Thu Jan 19, 2017 8:27 pm

(Aiming for a job in Acorn childcare, Bundaberg. Am 17 & I'm studying cert 3 right now. Never had a job before either)

How much do you get paid an hour when new?

What to do if you turn up to work late or early? What if you slept in all day?

What's a: OOSH, FDC & LDC?

How do you leave work at the end of a shift? Do you have to tell someone you're leaving? (Never had a job before)

What's the difference between: long daycare centre, family daycare centre & occasional care?

Can a newbie get a full time job straight away in childcare? How many hours is normally full time in childcare?

What is a good pay & hours for a new, full time, 17 yr old childcare worker?

Can you be a causal & a full time working for the same centre? How would that work?

Do you get paid on weekends if you work full time but am new? What about public holidays?

Do any centres stay open at night?

What do you do if the parents don't turn up before closing time?

1) Your wage begins at $21.61 once you have become Cert 3 qualified.
2) If you don't turn up on time, the Director will contact you to find out where you are. If you are constantly late then you will receive a warning which could result in you losing your job. So, make sure you're not late and if you inform the Director beforehand. For example, if you're stuck in traffic
3) OOSH (before and after school care), FDC (family day care), LDC (long day care).
4) Yes, then you will sign out and leave.
5) Long day care - usually opens from 8 am to 6 pm from birth to 5 years, Family Day Care - you work as the only educator with 7 children, Occasional Care - children are casual, not consistent have different children all the time.
6) Yes, you can get a full-time job. You can work a 38 hour week or a 40 hour week over 4 days with a day off in between.
7) When are you turning 18?
8) No, you can either be a casual or work full time, you cant do both.
9) No, you don't usually work weekends unless the centre is open on the weekend which is rare - since most services are usually open Mon to Fri. You get paid on public holidays only if you usually work on that specific day that the public holiday falls on.
10) No, not usually although some centre stays open until 6:30 or 7 pm.
11) If parents turn up late, they are fined per minute until they show up. The centre will have the policy to follow if that occurs. The fines are usually very high so parents will make it on time.

Hope this helps!
