Invitation Open To Participate In 10 Week Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework

NSW Early Childhood Education is inviting early childhood education and care (ECEC) services to engage with the Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework in a 10-week program.

This framework is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to create culturally safe environments for Aboriginal children and families in early learning settings.

Expressions of interest are now open for ECEC services to participate in a 10-week ‘momentum builders’ program where they will engage with the Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework for ECEC.

Participants will

  • improve their awareness of culturally safe and responsive environments
  • learn how to build collaborative relationships with families and community
  • explore weekly topics to recognise and facilitate culturally safe practices and environments for Aboriginal children, families and staff in ECEC settings
  • access new tools and resources each week
  • connect with other services to reflect, share their experiences, and ask questions

ECEC services interested in joining can apply by 30 April to take part in the 10-week ‘momentum builders’ program, which begins on 19 May. This program provides guidance, resources, and support to help services implement culturally responsive practices.

Applicants must be willing to commit to the 10-week program delivered in 2 sets of 5-week blocks (see schedule below) and be prepared to challenge their thinking, learn, and grow.

The Benefits Of The Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework

The Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework offers several key benefits, particularly in early childhood education and care settings. Here’s how it makes a difference:

  1. Creates Culturally Safe Environments—It helps early childhood services foster inclusive and respectful spaces where Aboriginal children and families feel valued, heard, and supported.

  2. Improves Educational Outcomes—By integrating Aboriginal perspectives into learning environments, children gain a stronger sense of identity and belonging, which can enhance their engagement and development.

  3. Supports Staff & Professional Development—The framework provides guidance for educators on culturally responsive practices, helping them build awareness, understanding, and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities.

  4. Encourages Community Collaboration – It promotes partnerships between early childhood services and Aboriginal families, ensuring that cultural knowledge and traditions are respected and incorporated into daily practices.

  5. Strengthens Policies & Continuous Improvement—The framework is designed as a continuous learning process, helping organizations evaluate and refine their approaches to cultural safety over time.

By participating in programs like the 10-week ‘momentum builders’ initiative, early childhood services can take meaningful steps toward embedding cultural safety in their practices.
