Sorry Day – Part 1
The Pine Tree Early Childhood Education and Care Service caters for a wide variety of families from different cultural backgrounds. They pride themselves on providing an inclusive environment that is respectful of all families and children. Sarah, the team leader in the kindy room, is very proud of her Aboriginal heritage. She enjoys sharing her culture with children and colleagues and is pleased to have contributed to a better understanding of her people.
At a recent staff meeting the coordinator announced that Sarah would be given extra time to plan activities to for National Sorry Day. National Sorry Day is held on the 26th May each year to acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations, those people who were affected by the government policy of forcibly removing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.
Jack and Kate, the other educators in the kindy room, seemed surprised when they heard about the time Sarah had been given. When Sarah was on her lunch break and out of the room, Kate commented that it was unfair that Sarah got extra time to prepare for National Sorry Day. Kate told Jack that she did not like having to incorporate this into the curriculum. Jack did not respond to Kate’s comments.
