CHCECE017 - Scenarios: Leila and Carlos

Post by jazzybec » Thu Feb 16, 2017 9:41 pm

Scenario - writing
Leila (3 years 6 months) is an outdoors girl. She loves climbing, kicking and throwing balls, digging in the garden and making dams in the digging patch. She has two older brothers who are keen footballers and an older sister who is excelling in ballet. Leila's parents are concerned that Leila shows no interest in fine motor activities, has poor scissor skills and an immature pencil grip.

Question: what advice/information would you provide the parent?

Answer: I would not be concerned about Leila's development as she is excelling in her gross motor abilities .. I would also suggest working with her at home on cutting and holding a pencil and assure the parents that we will run some activities focusing on these skills during the day as well.

Scenario: Poor Posture
Carlos (4 years 9 months) is a bright and intense child. He loves to research information about animals and insects. Carlos has a reading age of 7-8 years and has taught himself to write. Carlos is a serous collector shells, rocks, erasers and marbles and his grandfather has taught him how to document his collections. Lately Carlos has been complaining of headaches, back and shoulder pain. He tends to sit hunched over when reading and writing and he also holds his pen quite firmly.

Question: what advice/information would you provide the parents?

Answer: provide pamphlets/print outs of information about posture, work on pen grip ??? I'm lost with this one help please!!!

Any and all help on this would be much appreciated that you so much!!

For Leila - to be able to hold a pencil correctly or even to cut with scissors a child needs to strengthen the muscles in their hands and wrists. These activities such as play dough, clay, threading, sand play, tearing paper, etc. will help develop those muscles in order to hold a pencil correctly and use scissors.

For Carlos - document and record Carlos complaints, talk to parents about it and if they noticed anything at home, maybe introduce him to strengthening exercises such as yoga, talk to GP.

Hope this helps!
