Q: When Analysing Observations How Do You Know Which Learning Outcome To Use?

Post by Lorina » Fri Feb 13, 2026 2:37 pm

A: When analysing observations, selecting the right learning outcome depends on several factors:

Identify the Learning Evident in the Observation—Ask yourself: What learning took place here? This helps determine which outcome aligns with the observed behavior or skill.

Consider Strengths and Interests—Look at what the learner is naturally drawn to. If the observation highlights a particular strength or interest, choose an outcome that supports further development.

Developmental Perspective—If the observation raises concerns about a learner’s progress, select an outcome that addresses those developmental needs.

Future Planning—If the observation is significant enough to inform future learning experiences, use an outcome that allows for extension and deeper exploration.

Assessment Methods— Consider whether the learning outcome requires direct or indirect assessment. Some outcomes are best measured through standardized tests, while others rely on observations, portfolios, or student reflections.

For me, it starts with looking at the learning I can clearly see. I focus on the child’s strengths or interests in that moment and match the outcome that naturally aligns with it.

That sounds like a really practical approach. Starting with what’s clearly visible and building from the child’s strengths makes the process feel more natural rather than forced. It also probably helps keep the learning meaningful for the child, since you’re following what they’re already engaged in. Matching outcomes that way seems like it would lead to more genuine progress.

The key is to match what you actually see in your observation with what the learning outcome describes.
If a behavior or skill is clearly demonstrated, the choice usually becomes obvious. It is also worth looking at the context, interests, level of development and where it is logical to move next. Over time, this comes as intuition, you just start to recognize the correct outcome more quickly.
