CHCCN301C - Scenario: Excursion To Local Playground

Post by Cilla » Thu Nov 22, 2012 5:22 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: CHCCN301C Ensure the health & Safety of Children
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Beginner

Your Question?
Hi every one
I actually have a few questions that I'm stuck on I'm just not sure how to answer them and can't really find any information on it.

This is the scenario
15 preschool 4-5 year olds
You are part of a group from a children’s service taking this group on an excursion to a local playground. You will be walking from the centre along several roads to the playground where you will supervise the children playing. As an educator you will be responsible for a smaller group of children as well as helping to maintain the health and safety of all people on the excursion.

1. Explain the behaviour and safety guidelines you will discuss with your group of children regarding the walk to the playground. Include road safety.

2. Draw a simple plan of the playground and surroundings, (e.g. use the layout of your local playground)
Mark on the plan with a “X” where the potential risks and hazards are. On another piece of paper describe
how you will deal with each one.

NEW SCENARIO
The children play again afterwards and you notice one of the children, Marcus lying quietly in one corner of the playground, which is unusual behaviour for him. You walk up to Marcus and observe he has a flushed face which is hot to touch, and his eyes are a little glassy.

3. What steps would you follow to assist Marcus?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
1. This is my answer for number 1 but I'm just writing what I think not anything I have read.
- Explain to the children that they need to make sure they are holding hands while we are walking or crossing a road to make sure we are all together.
- Tell them they need to make sure they are listening to the adults at all times and that if they are yelling they might not be able to hear the carers.
- Explain to the children that the adults will need to do head counts to make sure all the children are there and that it will be hard to count if we don’t stay still.

2. I can easily draw a playground but I'm not exactly sure what kind of hazards I'm required to write down, is the slide a hazard?? and will just ensuring the children are supervised accordingly enough to be "dealt with"

3. I have no idea what to do with marcus I would want to take him back to the centre but not sure if thats the right answer.

Description and Message:
I would really appreciate any help I can get I have been trying to figure these ones out for 2 weeks now and I'm just really struggling. I haven't studied for 10 years and I'm just not used to it all. It's due next week and I'm freaking out.
Thanks for your time.

Hazards might be things like broken glass near rubbish bins, srynges in sandpits, broken equipment. If the playground has a pond that would be another potential hazard. Is it close to roads? Again another potential hazard. For marcus, do you know his medical background. Checking into whether he is diabetic etc. so the first thing would be to check his medical details (you should have with you a list of all children's names, parent's contact numbers and medical info on every excursion.) Get your first aid bag, which again you need to have with you, sit marcus in the shade, offer him sips of water, loosen tight clothing and perhaps wipe him down with a cold flannel or something similar. Report your concerns to your supervisor, you will not be on the excursion as the only adult, they may need to phone the parent to get permission to administer paracetamol or the centre to have him taken back there. If a real emergency, of course contact 000.
Hope this gives you a few ideas

Thankyou this does help. Just thinking with teacher to student ratio, we couldn't leave to take him back to the center???? Is this right?? Also it's says where would you position your self for the safely of the children? I was thinking the middle of the play ground so I can see every part of the play ground.

Thanks

Hi Anne,

Did you ever find information regarding this question:

Explain the behaviour and safety guidelines you will discuss with your group of children regarding the walk to the playground. Include road safety.

I can't find information anywhere and the cluster is due in a few days!!!!

Thanks!

J
