National Children's Week - Celebrating Children's Rights

From 19 October - 28 October, we celebrate National Children's Week. It's a celebration of children's rights and the right for children to enjoy childhood. During this week, it also gives children an opportunity to demonstrate their talents skill's and abilities.

Children’s Week is a week-long celebration centred around Universal Children’s Day, a day created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954 to promote friendship and understanding among children of the world. It is also a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The Charter referred to is the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The following posters are downloadable (click on the title above each poster) and promote the UN Convention Rights of the Child, which can be displayed within the service, in child-friendly language:

This year the Children’s Week National Theme 2018 UNCRC Article 12 'Children's views and opinions are respected. They have the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child and the right to be heard.'

Activities that can be included within an early childhood service:

  • teddy bears picnic
  • children drawing colourful posters of their family
  • have brainstorming/discussions on topics of interests with the children
  • have a show and tell
  • do an "all about me" topic
  • have a show for children to put on a performance
  • on Universal Children's Day, Wednesday 24th October, dress in blue and raise funds to support the work of UNICEF.
  • add the "child's voice" to their drawings/artwork
  • add "child input" to your curriculum
  • in the mornings ask children what they want to do for the day (spontaneous)
  • organise a special fun day for children with fun activities and games
  • have a dress-up day
