Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn't that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.

The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes,
When down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose.

Alternative Lyrics:

They sent for the king's doctor,
who sewed it on again;
He sewed it on so neatly,
the seam was never seen.

Alternative Lyrics:

There was such a commotion,
that little Jenny wren
Flew down into the garden,
and put it back again.

Round and round the garden
Like a teddy bear.
One step, two step,
Tickle you under there.

Alternative Lyrics:

Round about there
Sat a little hare
The bow-wows came and chased him
Right up there.

Hints and Tips:

  • The nursery rhyme is accompanied by various actions, by the adult on the child or the child on the adult. The child/adult first lightly strokes his or her index finger in slow circles around the child/adult's upturned palm, then with each "step", walks their index and middle finger up the arm, firstly to the elbow and then to the shoulder. Finally after a short pause before the "tickle", they launch a (not unexpected) tickle under the arm.
