Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
Hi Bec,
I am actually thinking about doing my bachelor of education (early childhood) but I’m considering going with open.edu. At Open University they provide this degree with Curtin University and it covers birth to 8 years. The course is through correspondence with 4 years full time study (up to 10 years study for part time).
Does the bachelor degree offered by CSU takes less duration than 4 years since they only doing birth to 5 years?
Have you enrolled with CSU yet ? It will be great if you share any information you find since I am also considering doing my bachelor of education...

Hey Guys,
Just a couple of questions...
Have you both got your diploma?
Are you looking for full time study on campus?
Leah - do you want to do bachelor of education "early childhood" or "primary school"?
Cheers ,

Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
Hi Leah,
If you were looking into doing your degree in Early Childhood I think you will get a year of study off your degree (because you completed your diploma).
When you apply you can provide Recognition Of Prior Learning which will determine what units you won't need to complete in your degree (because you have already studied it in your diploma).
I also understand that you may be able to use your experience (through work) to help assess which units you won't have to complete. Although you have to provide evidence and detailed information about each of the units you think you won't need to complete.
I'm not too sure whether the same applies for the primary school teaching. I assume because you're dealing with an older age group as well as teaching in a school you many not be able to use your Diploma of Children's Services for Recognition of Prior Learning towards some of the units. This also may depend on where you decide to do your degree…
Hope this gives you a few more options!

Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
hi colorful,
The University of Western Sydney offers a Bachelor of Education (Birth to 5 years). Since you have completed your Diploma of Children's Services you will receive 12 months advance standing. So it will take you 3 years of full time study to complete the Bachelor of Education (Birth to 5 years). This course is available at the Bankstown or Penrith campus. You can find more info here: http://future.uws.edu.au/ug/teach_edu/e ... to_5_years

Bachelor of Education/Teaching (birth to 5 years)
Hi
i am part way through completing the Bachelor of Education (birth to five years) through Charles Sturt Univerity.
The course is not listed on the Victorian Gazette as a recognised qualification for work in Victoria.
Does anyone else have this qualification? Or can give me any information on if it is recognised in Victoria.
Thanks
Kateyjayn

Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
Hi Kateyjayn,
I did some research for you and I find out some information that helps you with your question.
I had a look through the Victorian Gazette and the reason you couldn't find your qualification is because Charles Sturt University is a recognized institute only in NSW. From what I understand The Victorian Gazette only has recognized institutes for the state of Vic and Charles Sturt University is a recognized institute in NSW. When you complete your qualification through CSU the course is accredited with the NSW Institute of Teaching.
Don't worry you can still be recognized with your qualification for work in Victoria although you will need to apply for it. When registering your qualification for work in Victoria you will need to apply for a "Memorandum of Understanding" through the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Under the "Memorandum of Understanding "if you have graduated from an approved teacher education courses in NSW then you will be able to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching which will enable you to work in Victoria..
Just a couple of things… with your Bachelor of Education qualification are you wanting to teach at primary schools? Because while researching I find out if you want to teach Kindergarten to Year 2 in a primary school with a qualification in Early Childhood you will need to have units of study in discipline knowledge, pedagogy and professional experience related to 5 - 8 years old.
If you are just wanting to complete your Bachelor of Early Education to be eligible to be a teacher in a preschool or prior to school setting then it's not covered by NSW Institute of Teaching, which I assume means that you will not be able to work in a school setting in Victoria. However I think you may be able to work in Victoria in an early childhood setting with your qualification.
Best bet is to contact your course advisor at CSU and have a chat about the options available to you…. Basically I think it comes down to whether or not you are wanting to teach in a primary school setting or in an early childhood setting.
Before I go I'll give you the links to the NSW Institute of Teaching and the Victorian Institute of Teaching just in case you want some further info.
NSW Institute of Teaching: http://www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/Teach ... ch-in-NSW/
VIC Institute of Teaching: http://www.vit.vic.edu.au/registration/ ... s/MOU.aspx
Please let us know if you find out any further information. It will definitely help out our other members…

Thanks a lot for your great information!!!!
I told these information to my classmates. One of them said to me that it will take only 3 years if a student goes straight to a university from HSC. Instead of 1.5 years for Dip in Tafe plus 3 years for the Bachelor (4.5 years in total). Was my friend right or she didn't get correct information? Could you explain these things for me, please?!!
Have a lovely week!!!!
Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
Hi Colourful,
I have been looking at a few uni myself for the bachelor of education/teaching and so far I was only able to find courses that offers 4 years Full-time study. The only time I have seen the bachelor degree in education or teaching less than 4 years is when you receive an exemption for prior learning of some sort. I havent seen one that offers a 3 years degree and that too without any exemption for the diploma.. Can I ask which uni was your friend referring to?
Some of the uni that I found that is offering the 4 years degree in Bachelor of education (early childhood) are Macquarie Uni, Curtin university and CSU as well I think....
Could it be that your friend might be referring to a Bachelor Degree in general? I mean there are some undergraduate degree that I know of (like some bachelor of science, etc..) that has a 3 year full time study. But I am yet to find one that offers only 3 years full time study, for someone without a diploma, and wanting to do Bachelor of education or Bachelor of teaching..
Also, i think, if you have not done your diploma yet and want to do an undergraduate degree in bachelor of education, then you are better off enrolling to the degree rather than doing a diploma first. But if you are not sure about doing a degree yet and want to consider the degree only in the future after seeing the way things go for you, then you can think of doing a diploma first (to get a head start somewhere) and then see how you go...
Wish you all the best!

Re: Charles Sturt University Bach. Teaching (Birth-5yrs)
Thanks for asking this question. I am currently doing my Certificate III and want to go to Open Uni to do my BA of Early childhood. I think Curtin looks good , but heard good things about Charles Sturt. I have to do a correspondence course though.

USQ (Uni of Southern QLD) offers Bach of Ed through distance/online learning as well
http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/current/ ... ramsummary
You get credits if u have done a Diploma or Adv Dip ( 8 & 12 units off respectively) so about 1 year if u have done your Dip and 1.5 yrs off if done Adv Dip as the full 4yr course entails u doing 32 units
http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/current/ ... exemptions
The B.Ed has specialisations and if you do the Early Childhood one it means you can teach upto Grade 3 of Primary School, as well as of course teaching in childcare centres etc
I have heard good things about this course & uni, we had a student doing this program doing her prac experience when I worked on the Gold Coast .... she was from NSW & she said it was really good
When I do my B.Ed I will probably go through them
