Hi there,
I am fairly new to the Certificate III and I have recently been struggling with passing my assessments.
I am having problems with the following case study:
Case Study 5
You have just begun working in the 0-2s room at an early childhood education and care service. One of the other educators in the room is reluctant to allow the children to feed themselves and still insists on having all of the children sitting in high chairs for every meal. From your studies and professional readings, you know that children should be encouraged to develop self-help skills and be given the opportunity to experience relaxed, enjoyable mealtimes.
a) Which staff members should you approach with your concerns?
My response was:
I would approach the educator in question and have a chat with them about the problem. I would encourage them to follow policies and procedures and talk to them in a way that doesn’t make them feel like I am blaming them. Team work is important in an early childhood and education setting, and it is essential that children are being encouraged to learn to the best of their abilities.
However apparently this is incorrect and the educator isn't who I would approach. I have been asked to do more research. I am fairly confident that the correct answer is to approach the director, however I was wondering where I can find the information to confirm this.
Also b) What steps would you take to change the culture in the 0-2s room around meal times without causing conflict amongst the educators?
I answered:
• Talk to the educator in question
• Work as a team and come to an appropriate conclusion
• Ensure the menu is age appropriate
• Work together to provide the children with developmentally appropriate furniture, utensils and cutlery
• Ensure each cultural and religious needs are being met
Also apparently incorrect
Any help is appreciated
Thank you!

Re: Case Study 5 Which Staff Members
Since it's just another educator working alongside you then you need to express your concerns to the room leader (team leader). You can also express your concerns to the assistant director (2IC)...a) Which staff members should you approach with your concerns?
Also b) What steps would you take to change the culture in the 0-2s room around meal times without causing conflict amongst the educators?
- Putting the older toddlers on chairs and sitting at the tables while keeping the younger ones in high chairs.
- Offering spoons to children while still helping them to eat.
- Getting staff to sit with a few children to assist them with their eating.
Hope this helps,
,
Lorina
