Hi Monty,

The theme "Under the Sea" is very popular especially in the preschool room. I have used this theme with my group of children so I can give you some of the ideas I had come up with.

1. Topics/area of interest?

Sea Creatures
The Ocean

2. choose only 1 topic area that you can extend?

Sea Creatures

3. write a mind map of the learning that can take place around the topic?

a) Investigate different kinds of fish and animals live in the water.
b) Where do fish live?
c) Discussing pollution and how sometimes people pollute the sea. Reinforce that we need to keep it safe for plants, animals and people.
d) Investigate the ocean food chain.
e) Habitats of different ocean animals.

4. From the learning that can take place write some learning outcomes ?

a) To extend children's knowledge on the different types of sea creatues that lve in the ocean.
b) To provide an understanding of the causes of poolution.
c) To create an understanding of the importance of an ocean environment.
d) To encourgae children to identify the names of different sea creatures.

5. write the provisions/experiences?

Under the Sea Wall – Cut out pictures of animals that live under the sea from magazines and have preschoolers help you glue the pictures to a piece of poster board during circle time. Each circle time you could practice naming the animals on the poster

Under the Sea- Give preschoolers fish stickers and have them decorate the bottom half of a piece of construction paper with the fish. Have preschoolers draw any additional sea life or sea vegetation that they want. When preschoolers are done, help them glue blue saran wrap to the bottom half of the page to show that the scene is under water.

Wave Bottle – Fill a clean plastic bottle with water. Tint with a few drops of blue food coloring. Add vegetable oil or baby oil to the jar. Seal the jar by placing a little bit of super glue on the inside of the lid and closing tightly. When preschoolers shake the bottle they will have their very own wave machine.

This should give you a bit of an idea of how to extend on a child's interest.

GoodLuck!
