HAPPY BIRTHDAY
A parent of a child in the 3-5 year old children's room asked staff not to allow her child to join in the singing of Happy Birthday to other children as this practice conflicted with the family's religious beliefs. The parent was shocked to see a photo of the group displayed on the notice board which included her child singing Happy Birthday to her child's best friend. The educator explained that when the Birthday cake was brought out, the child had cried when she was asked to go to another part of the room to read books while the celebrations took place. As a result, they decided not to exclude the child as they didn't want to upset her further.

Re: Scenario: Child Not Joining In Birthday Celebrations
So the ethical dilemma is that you felt bad for the child because it was her best friends bday yet due to her religious beliefs she shouldn't have particpated as her parents requested.
So what should you do, how would you respond to the parent?

Re: Scenario: Child Not Joining In Birthday Celebrations
Ok, yes she should have been removed from the celebrations before the cake was brought out... You need to apologise to the parent and empathise with them. You need to assure the parent of the strategies that will be in place if there is a birthday celebration and how their child will not be involved as per the wishes of the parent...
