Scenario: Sam and Jenny

Post by Bec Davis » Sat Apr 11, 2015 9:29 pm

Hi all i am needing some help with 2 questions, i am wanting to know if i am understanding the questions and if i am on the right track please help, here is the scenario

Scenario:
Sam (11 month old) and has been coming into for 1 month. His parents indicated at the interview that he eats lunch around 11.30, the cues for knowing he is ready for lunch starts with Sam whinging and wiggling. The parents have informed Jenny (the educator) that his usual routine for this part of the day starts with having his nappy changed. Sam has a small towel as a comforter when he is upset or going to sleep.

Jenny notices Sam has gone from playing with the blocks contently to kicking the blocks and loud babbling. Jenny response to this change in Sam’s behaviour by scooping him and his towel up and said, “are you feeling hungry Sam, is it time for you to have your nappy change and get some lunch” she smiles at Sam as she picks him up and hugs him, she walks over and places him gently on the change table, she hands him his towel which he hugs tightly. ‘Let’s change your nappy so you’ll feel more comfortable’. ‘First let’s get those shorts off, then the wet nappy can come off, Sam’. ‘Then we’ll clean you up ready for lunch’. As Jenny completes this task she makes eye contact with Sam and states ‘there, doesn’t that feel better Sam? Let's get your shorts back on, left leg in (lifting Sam left leg) and right leg and I’ll pull them up’.

Jenny smiles at Sam as she lifts him from the change table, ‘Ok Sam we’re ready to wash our hands to get rid of any germs so we can have some lunch, let’s go’. Jenny takes Sam to the bathroom, Sam smiles at Jenny and babbles, Jenny asks Sam to place out his right hand (she holds his right hand out and places some soap on it then instructs Sam to wash his hands together (helping him with this task), Jenny begins to sing ' wash, wash, wash your hands, wash your together’ Sam babbles along as Jenny sings Jenny smiles at him ‘yes Sam wash, wash, wash’. ‘Let’s get a paper towel to dry those hands Sam’ Jenny says, they finish the process by Jenny patting dry Sam’s hands (singing dry, dry dry, your hands…). Jenny opens to bin and gives Sam the paper towel, he throws the paper towel in.

‘We are finish ‘Jenny states, “are you ready for lunch’. ‘Mmmm’ Sam said, Jenny responds: ’yes Sam it is lunch time, let’s get your lunch box and see what yummy food you have today’

Questions

7. Consider how this scenario demonstrates Jenny’s ability to collect information about children and use this to inform her practice and Sam’s experiences while in Jenny’s setting?

My answer so far: Jenny is able to effectively collect information through observations, reading body language, referring to previous information provided on Sam, she uses this information to respond to Sam and his needs and is able to keep similarities between Sam's home routine and in his childcare setting this creates comfort for Sam and also allows Jenny to introduce sam to new learning experiences.

8. Reflecting on the scenario: In what way did Jenny initiate and model language, and extend on his verbalising and sounds for Sam? My answer so far: Jenny was able to verbalise Sam's feelings and actions to him such as: “are you feeling hungry Sam, is it time for you to have your nappy change and get some lunch”, Jenny identifies all parts of the process to Sam verbally through talking to Sam and Song

Yeah, you're on the right track! Good response and shows you have an understanding if the questions. I like how you added examples from the scenario into your second questions as evidence!
