What is the primary purpose of the Medication Policy?
To ensure effective care and health management of children who require medication by the safe administration of medication in compliance with the regulation.
How is the Medication Policy implemented?
* MEDICATIONS refers to lotions, creams, tablets, mixtures, inhalers, sprays and nebulizers or any other prescription medications
* NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS will not be administered without an authority letter from a doctor providing dosage details to staff. This includes all herbal and alternative medications.
* Medications must be brought in their original container and have the pharmacy label attached. Medication is to be current and prescribed in the name of the child with a readable dosage on label.
* ANTIBIOTICS will only be administered form the 3rd day of the course. That is the first 48 hours dosage is to be administered at home by parent.
*Any lotions or creams needing to be applied to the genital or buttocks area will not be administered by staff at any time. This is to ensure the child's right to privacy and the protection of all centre staff regarding child protection issues.
* If at anytime staff are concerned about dosage or medication the doctor prescribing the medication will be contacted for authority over the phone.
How is the Medication Policy reviewed and monitored?
* All medications to be given to a child during the day will be given to either the staff member in contact with child or the Director. They will not be left in the child's bag at anytime.
* A Medications Authority form is to be filled in very day the child requires medication. This form must be signed by parent only. In the case of another adult dropping off child, the parent is to provide a letter stating details an dosage of medication giving staff authority to administer same.
* Staff will check medication for dosage prescription label. child's name, expiry date and then place medication into lockable container in first aid boxes located on classroom wall or in fridge.
* When administering Medication staff will together with another member, witness administering, check label, dosage and details on the bottle for child, measure out and check dosage and ensure correct child is given medication. Both staff will sign, date and record time that medication was given on medication authority form.
* For long term medication a letter from a Doctor outlining details of illness, name of medication, triggers when medication is required and dosage required. A Long Term Medication form is to be filled in by the parent of the child.
When administering this medication staff will complete the Long Term Medication Authority form and follow the procedure as outlined in this policy - referring to the doctors letter for details. Parents of the child will be requested to sign form on their return to pick up child. This is to acknowledge that the medication was given to the child while in our care.
What is the primary purpose of the Use and Storage of Hazardous Items Policy?
To ensure that all hazardous items (including children’s medications) are used and stored in accordance with directions. All hazardous items must be stored so that they are not accessible to children. Hazardous items must also be used in such a way as to minimise the risk of illness and injury to staff.
How is the Use and Storage of Hazardous Items Policy implemented?
• All hazardous items including:
- medications
- cleaning products, bleach, chemicals
- garden and pest control chemicals
- sharp utensils such as adult scissors, utility knives etc
- washing detergent, dish washing detergent
- any other items or products that may be hazardous to children
must be stored in areas that are not accessible to children.
• Children’s medications must be stored in a clearly labelled lockable container in the refrigerator.
• All first aid kits are stored in a purpose made container and kept on an adult height shelf in each room.
• All detergents and cleaning products must be stored in a designated lockable cupboard
• All chemicals and hazardous products used in the outdoor area are to e stored in a lockable cupboard in the outdoor storage shed.
• All hazardous items are to be clearly labelled.
• All hazardous items must be entered onto Safety Data Sheets.
• All staff must place handbags in staff lockers in staffroom.
• Parents will be reminded not to leave handbags here they can be accessed by children.
The ‘Education and Care Services National Regulation 2011’ state that children need to be signed in and out of the Children’s Service each day. Describe the procedure used by your service to ensure children are signed in and out each day.
The approved provider must ensure that an accurate attendance record is kept which: • records the full name of each child attending the service • records the date and time each child arrives and departs • is signed on the child’s arrival and departure by either: – the person who delivers or collects the child – the nominated supervisor or an educator – for family day care services, if the signature of the person who delivers the child cannot be reasonably obtained, the family day care educator may sign.
