Two separate fires have rocked Play and Learn childcare centres across Sydney in less than a week, prompting serious concerns for community safety and early education environments.
Castle Hill Blaze
In the early hours of Monday morning, fire crews responded to a blaze at the Castle Hill centre on Excelsior Avenue. The fire, quickly extinguished, caused minor damage and no reported injuries. Authorities have launched a formal investigation, treating the scene as a potential criminal act.
Connection to Turramurra Attack?
Just three days earlier, a shocking firebombing occurred at the Play and Learn centre in Turramurra. Masked individuals reportedly broke through the front entrance, poured petrol in the foyer, and ignited the building. Though damage was limited, the emotional toll reverberated through the community, leading to the centre’s temporary closure and a separate crime scene declaration.
Community Voices
Centre leadership and local families expressed grief and fear in response to the incidents. “We're here to serve the community—and today we can't,” said Jemma Quinlan, Play and Learn’s head of operations. Parent Princi Chauhel shared, “I'm feeling a little bit scared... What is happening here?”
Implications for Early Childhood Providers
These events underscore the importance of proactive safety protocols, trauma-informed responses, and contingency planning in childcare settings. While investigations are ongoing, it may be time for sector-wide reflection on facility security and emotional resilience strategies for educators, children, and families.
