HLTWHS300A - Eliminate Hazards Using Risk Management Plan

Post by SierrasMumma » Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:27 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: Hltwhs300A
Your Assignment Type: Standard Question
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Basic Knowledge

Your Question?
I have been stuck on this one for almost 2 months, I guess the way its worded is a little offputting
Report on three identified hazards and in adequcies found in the risk management plan developed for eliminating or minimising hazards examined in your risk assessment. Refer to thehierarchy of risk control and your workplaces prcedured to develop a plan that clearly identifies thge control measures that you will implement.

Embed in your report your recommendations showingunderstanding to relevant legislation, regulations and codes of conduct,

Present your investigation and recommendations for the three hazards in a format that could be given to your workplace WHS committee for actioning

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
Risk Assessment plan
Use of damaged or broken toys
1.1 Children feel safe, secure and supported
3.2 The environment is inclusive, promotes competence, independent exploration and learning through play
2.3.2 Every reasonable precaution is taken to protect children from harm and any hazard likely to cause injury

Toys should be checked a minimial of weekly to ensure they are operating at there full potential. Loose parts and pieces should be re-attached and ensure they are fitted securely to minimise a possibility of choking. Damaged or broken toys need to be removed immediately from play to help prevent any possible injuries

A register should be implemented in the shed or where toys are kept, Workers putting toys out for outside play, they can check this every morning to ensure safe toys are placed outside. Each toy that has broken or is need of mending should be written down immediately to keep all workers updated.

Playing with broken or damaged toys is dangerous for the children in care, the toy may break further causing serious injury to child, a loose part may break/fall off posing a choking hazard. Safety is a serious priority within the childcare industry, children shouldn't be exposed to such a threat to their safety

Description and Message:
So reports honestly have never been my strong point, and i am struggling on doing this activity, I have finished everything in the book except this bit.

OK, so the first one you did seems to be on the right track...

Have you come up with the other 2 yet?

It could be something like, you've notice staff not wearing gloves when handling food or children and staff not washing their hands properly, nappy change area is not cleaned properly, staff and manual handling, floor spills not being moped up straight away, cleaning sprays and medication not locked away etc.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas.

Thank you!! I am seriously so happy now I could cry. I also have hand washing minimal and obscured vision for my other two reports. I guess I just needed to know that it was correct and what the question was originally after :-)

Obscured vision due to painted windows
1.1 Children feel safe, secure and supported
2.3.1 Children are adequately supervised at all times

Windows have been painted over in the nurseries obscuring immediate vision of sleeping, babies/infants. Many dangers can arise from this
-Babies could injure or become injured. (trying to climb from cot, become tangled in sheet)
-Complete air way obstruction does not allow for a noise (possible wheeze)
Childcare workers should be in a position to see and easily reach all children within his/her care, when babies/infants are asleep regular checks need to be conducted to ensure their safety.

Windows could be tinted to allow for a slight darkness in the sleep room

Hand washing Minimal

2.1.1 Each childs health needs are supported
2.1.3Effective hygiene practices are promoted and implemented
2.1.4 Steps are taken to control the spread of infection
3.2 Children take increasing responsibilty for their own health and physical well being

The personal hygiene should be at a hugh standard for every childcare workers or any other person in the child care industry, Good hand washing practices sets a good example to children as they look to their teachers as role models.

Cleaning of hands should be done upon entering the centre, after completing tasks (Nappy changes, use of tiolet etc). Upon entering a different room (Nursery to toddler), every 2 hours when interacting with children, before and after lunch breaks and upon leaving the centre
-Lack of hygiene could help introduce germs and harmful bacteria to young devloping immune systems

Sorry about the delay...My 2 month old is sick with a cold...

The hazards that you have came up with are good and the report you have written is clear on what the hazard is and how to fix it. I'm just attaching the hierarchy of control measures. I also think you need to include this into your response. Just identify which level each of the hazards are at and add this into your report. everything else you have written seems alright to me.

So I retyped certain parts of the reports to include the control measures needed have been done, with the first I felt that the mention of immediate elimination would be enough :-) Thanks L.A your a life saver
