Several pre-schoolers are sitting at the puzzle table where they are working on puzzles with an Aboriginal art design of various Australian animals.
Dasras:" I've got the Echidna. Its very,very hard but I can do it".
Toa:" I've got the Wombat."
Dasras: "Thats not a Wombat. It's a Echidna, silly".
Toa:" No its not. Its a Wombat".
The Educator, Matt, sits down at the table.
Dasras:"Matt tell Toa she's got a Echidna puzzle".
Matt:"Looks like an Echidna to me."
Dasras:" See I told you".
Toa:"Well it"s a dumb, stupid picture. That's not how you do a Echidna!"
Toa storms off.
Q1: Suggest how the Educator could follow up to promote respect?
Q2: What Knowledge of the Aboriginal culture could the children gain?
What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?

You could explain to Toa about aboriginal art. Describe how aboriginals use symbols and patterns through their artwork to represent nature and use colours in nature too. Aboriginal artwork painters also use materials around them to paint such as sticks, bark rick etc, so that's why the painting may appear "different". You could also show her books on aboriginal artwork and include a lesson plan on the children creating their own aboriginal painting.
