Your Question?
For this task you are to take on the role of Daniel. Read the scenario ‘The student’ and respond to the supervisor’s request on behalf of Daniel.
The student
Daniel is a child care worker and has been employed at the service for approximately eight months. Today a student from the local high school is commencing a two-week workplace experience. Daniel’s supervisor has asked him to explain to the student the procedures for cleaning the tables and tidying the equipment at the end of the morning play session.

The student shadows Daniel throughout the following weeks. One day when they were outside with the children the student asked Daniel the following questions. How should Daniel respond?


a. “It must be hard supervising so many children. It’s such a big playground and there are so many things going on. How do the carers manage to keep the children safe?”
Daniel’s response:


b. “There’s lots of equipment to set up and pack away. Do you just put out whatever you like wherever you like?”
Daniel’s response:


c. “Daniel how come the carer’s spend so much time getting the children to do things for themselves, wouldn’t it be quicker and easier just to do it for them?”
Daniel’s response:


d. “I’m amazed by all of these written policies and procedures. I know the children need to be safe but it seems you have a policy for every single thing you do. Isn’t that just way over the top?”
Daniel’s response:


What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
a. knowing -Being aware of where children are and the number of children you are supervising
listening-For unusual sounds, crying or silence
positioning self-Making sure you position yourself to get the best possible view of the area at all times
scanning Watching and being aware of all activities occurring in the area, and looking around regularly

b) you can include information on programming and how the experiences that are provided are based upon those reflected upon the curriculum

c) discuss self help skills and independence and how it's important for children to develop these skills

d) the necessity for policies and procedures guides us in our work through legislation requirements
