CHCCS400A - Work within a relevant legal and ethical Framework (OTEN)

Post by FirefighterChild » Wed Nov 09, 2011 4:55 pm

NEED A BIT OF HELP WITH TASK 1 TO 4 ..
AFTER A FEW HELPFUL HITS TO GET ME GOING..

JUST AFTER A BIT OF POINT FORM HINTS AND TIPS TO GET ME OFF AND GOING

Task 1: Adhere to the childcare code of ethics.....
You are getting late children settled with Scott before a staff meeting and you overhear one of your staff members Belinda talking to him about Eleni, who has just left after being collected by her father. She is telling Scott that Eleni’s mother had told her that all was not well between her and Eleni’s father and that a possible separation was being discussed.

1. Is this ethical behaviour? Which Code of Ethics guidelines would assist you in this decision and how?
2. What will you do in the short-term? What would be your longer term team strategy?

Task 2: Work within the roles and responsibilities of a childcare worker

The room leader is going on holidays and Nikki has asked you to be responsible for the children’s program whilst she is away. The room leader will be absent for a month.
1. How does this request fit within your job description as an untrained child carer?
2. Based upon this, what would be your response to Nikki? What issues would you need to discuss and agree upon?

Task 3: Protect clients’ rights and interests
Jill arrives one afternoon very upset. She tells you that she has been phoning schools in the local area looking for a place for Fleur for next year. Jill feels that as soon as she mentions Fleur’s disability the schools become less welcoming.

1. How would you respond to Jill in this situation?
2. How would you support Jill in approaching appropriate services?

Task 4: Report indications of possible risk of significant harm

Jennifer Baker has a new partner. Ian, who has been living with her and the children for the past three months. You have noted changes in both Jack and Jesse’s behaviour during this time. Jack’s anxiety about loud noises has become more pronounced over this time and he has some slight bruising on his upper limbs which his mother puts down to his developmental stage and increased mobility. When Ian arrives one day to collect the children. (Jennifer has made him an authorised contact person), Jack clings to you and screams. He eventually settles and both children go home with him. You feel a little unsettled about the situation however and wonder if the children are at risk of, or are being significantly harmed.

1. What are the legal requirements you need to comply with? How would you monitor the situation while ensuring confidentiality? Who could you discuss this with?

A week later, Jesse attends the centre wearing a jumper even though the day is very warm. As the day gets warmer, you offer to take his jumper off but he is reluctant. At sleep time, you convince him to remove it. As he gets into bed you notice bruising under his t-shirt sleeves. You ask if you could see his arms and not bruising to both upper arms, one at the front and three on the soft underarm, resembling finger marks. You ask Jesse how he got the marks and he replies “Ian got cross at me for telling a lie”. You immediately tell him that you would have to tell someone who could help because it was not ok to hurt children. You reassured him and settled him into sleep before going to the office to inform Nikki and contact DoCS.

2. Follow the Centre’s and DoCS’ protocol and make a report. Remember to outline your reasons for concern and include any concerns you have concerning Jesse’s siblings.

Would apperciate any help that anyone can offer to get me kickstarted in the right direction i have done a bit of research but need help from someone to see if i'm going down the right track..

Hi in relation to mY post earlier on i have thought long and hard about my answers for task 1. And was hoping you could read them and point out any mistakes or places i might have gone off track while answering the questions..

Task 1
Questions and answers

1. Is this ethical behaviour? Which code of ethics guidelines would assist you in this decision and how?
No this is not ethical behaviour in this case I find it to be unethical behaviour as this particular parent has put their trust into this carer and all they can do is gossip about it. If Belinda cared to pay attention to the relevant codes of ethics which are put in place for a reason as when it comes to dealing with parents and any issue they may speak or tell you about you need to consider that they are informing you to make you aware of these issues because they only want what is best for Eleni and by knowing this you can use the information to help monitor and watch the way the Eleni behaves towards others while in your care and also to be able to communicate with her mother about things you may have noticed which may be impacting on Eleni . Belinda needs to consider not only has the parent developed a mutual bond of being able to communicate with her but also to be able to trust her with anything that she may feel you as the carer need to know as when Eleni’s mother is telling Belinda what is going on at the same time she is expecting a level of professionalism and trustworthiness and respect that you won’t gossip about what has been said. I would think that Belinda as a childcare worker should be more than aware of the confidentiality and respect that she owes the family and that includes not gossiping about particular information like that to other staff members’. In doing this she has portrayed the mother and if she was really concerned about the issues she could have chosen to approach the director and discussed this in private. In this case I don’t think Belinda has thought of what the outcome may be by sharing such personal information that a parent has shared with her and then going off and sharing it with another staff member. To me this is unethical and I have chosen the following codes to support me with my reason and they are:
ii. In Relation to families, I will:
1,3,4,6,7,9,10 I feel that these codes have help me make the decision I have made.

2. What will you do in the short-term? What would be your longer term team strategy?
Short term strategies that I would implement in this sort of situation.
• Approach Belinda and ask if you can talk to her regarding a particular issue that you have.
• Inform Belinda what you have over heard her telling another staff member and that you think that it was inappropriate information to share with another colleague and at this present time bring the code of ethics to attention and remind her for the responsibility and trust we have when told such information from parents . And ask Belinda does she feel she has done anything wrong by gossiping about this personal issue with another worker. Depending on the outcome you have either way I would highlight the importance about maintaining confidentiality and stress the importance that if Belinda is genuinely concerned that this issue is affect Eleni there are policies and procedures in place for dealing with issues like this.
• In saying this I would also make the centre manager or director aware of this issue as they have the right to know what is happening but do this with Belinda so that it doesn’t come across as dobbing on someone. And inform the director about what you and Belinda have already spoken about. And with the director’s help develop a longer term strategy for the whole team so that no-one is being singled out as a result of what has happen.

Longer-Term team strategy: (involving all staff members)
• Hold staff meetings that are relevant and focus on all areas and aspects of the code of ethics. And by doing this ask the staff to pick a particular code that interest them and think about what would be the outcomes if you were to breech or ignore that code. Do as a group or individual presentation and present to your fellow staff what you believe would be the outcomes of breeching a particular code of ethics.
• Review and revise the centres policies and procedures to dealing with confidentiality.
• Build collaborative relationships based on trust, respect and honesty.
• Acknowledge and support the personal strengths, professional experience and diversity which my colleagues bring to work.
• Make every effort to use constructive methods to manage differences of opinion in the spirit of collegiality.
• Share and build knowledge, experiences and resources with my colleagues.
• Collaborate with my colleagues to generate a culture of continual reflection and renewal of high quality practices in our early childhood centre.

feel free to correct me or highlight any areas where i could improve or anything that will guide me in the right direction..

Thankyou ..

Hi Ange,

Just read your answer to your question and it's really good! You addressed the issues that are relevant and referred to the correct code of ethics! It's exactly what I would do if I was faced in a similar situation... I can't think of anything else to add to your response... Awesome Job!
