Sharing information with families Case Scenario 2 – Slap!
Rod, a young father arrives to pick up his son Jake 4.6yrs. Jake’s mother died 9 months ago and Jake and his father are still grieving. Rod goes into the office to pay Jake’s fees. Jake follows him in, climbs onto a chair and starts to swing around.
‘Jake don’t do that. Get down, please.’ Jake ignores his father. ‘Jake, I said to get down.’
Jake continues to ignore his father and as he is spinning around he knocks over the waste paper basket.
Rod immediately pulls Jake off the chair and slaps him hard on the bottom. ‘I told you to get down. Now go out there and wait for me!’
Jake starts to cry and scream just as the carer walks into the office.

Scenario 1- Emma (4 years)
Emma is asthmatic and has allergies to many foods. She has spent a lot of time in hospital and her parents are concerned that she does not mix well with other children. They have enrolled her in the local preschool two days per week. Emma tells her parents that she doesn’t want to go to preschool and clings to her mother during the enrolment interview.
Emma’s mother expresses concern about the staff’s ability to identify and respond quickly to an asthma attack. You can see that Emma’s mother is looking very stressed.
