Cultural Issues Impacting Development of ATSI Child

Hi!

My question is:
Provide an example of how your awareness of your own (or another) culture could have a negative impact on the development of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child in your care.

I was going to talk about the parent-child relationship but never really got any further than the first sentence. I can't think of anything else to write (my brain has melted slightly from studying all day) and I'm desperate for help!

So, for this question maybe focus on your own culture. So, in Australian culture regarding the parent - educator relationship is very opened, you chit chat away, you form a bond, very friendly etc. However, if you have a ATSI child in your care you may hesitate to form a bond or even talk to the child's guardian just because you are not sure of the correct protocols and you don't want to offend the child's family. In this sense, you can't find out more about the child to further develop the child's individual program or ask the child's guardian what has happened over the weekend to get information on his interests...
