Scenario: Confidentiality Of Immunisation Details

Post by savannahn » Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:53 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: Legal and Ethical Framework, Privacy and Confidentiality
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Advanced Knowledge

Your Question?
i. Lia’s mother is completing the enrolment form for her daughter. One of the questions on the form relates
To Lia’s immunisation status. Lia’s mother refuses to answer the questions as she believes it is privacy
issue and her choice whether or not she has Lia immunised.

ii. What should the educator do? Explain?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
i. Is this a privacy issue? Is the parent required to disclose/answer? Why or why not?
The parent is required to disclose the immunisation status of the child, as it is a mandatory part of the enrolment form. Disclosing weather or not a child is immunised is a privacy issue and once the childcare facility is informed about the vaccination history of the child they have no legal obligation to forward that information onto any other service such as schools.

An immunisation record is required to protect the child’s health and well being and the health and well being of other students, for example, if there is an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease then unimmunized children may be asked to stay at home to protect their health and safety by preventing the contraction of a preventable disease. Lia cannot be enrolled in the service until a vaccination record is provided.

ii. The educator needs to explain that there is no pressure to immunise and they are not in a position to judge the personal decision of the parents, but that a record of immunisation is required as stated in the National Quality Standards. It is put in place to protect the health and safety of the child.

Description and Message:
I have attempted the question and visited a lot of websites, also websites suggested in this forum and am still unsure about my response.

Thanks

Yes, you're on the right track with your response...

You can also include that if the the family wishes to receive CCB (child care benefit) then they need to show their child immunisation details. More information on this can be found here: Immunising Your Child

Hope this helps,

Guys any help in that please?
Current records of children’s immunisation status are up-to-date and a procedure is in place to maintain the currency. Yes or No

Find out how your vocational work placement keep current records of the status of each child’s immunisations.
a) Does the service have a procedure in place to maintain the currency of immunisation records? Submit a copy of the procedure and write the filename.
Filename:

b) Does the service have a process for obtaining information from families about their children’s current immunisation status? Describe the process in detail or submit a copy of the service’s written process. Provide the filename below.
