Creating a more natural environment

Post by roxy88 » Tue Mar 25, 2014 9:24 pm

Hi all,
I currently work as a leading educator in a babies room (0-2 yrs)
I'm wanting to create a more natural environment for my children to learn and explore in and am wanting to remove plastic toys and move towards wooden. Also, I am wanting to create constant experiences rather than just having one purpose toys in the room
Has anyone recently converted their room like this and have any tips on where to start, ideas, etc?!

I think it's a great idea to create more of a natural feel for babies and to try and minimise plastic. Buying wooden toys to replace plastic ones is one way to start however this can be quite expensive but all in all worth it.

When wanting to change the environment you need to consider the the ages and stages of children. Younger babies are most likely to put everything they pick up in their mouth however older babies will love to play with items such as stones, sticks, flowers, shells, pebbles, sand, dirt, leaves and more!

Here is some info to get you started:

Using Built and natural Environments
Natural Play Environments

For constant experiences:

Wooden blocks is a must
Wooden figurines ( people, animals)
Wooden fruits, veggies for role play etc.
wooden pattern blocks
Lots of different sensory experiences with sand, mud, water, leaves etc.

Hope this gives you some ideas,

You can add silk scarfs, and textured fabric
for sensory explore.
Lots of corrugated boxes for the toddlers
to crawl in and out.
Branches and leaves to explore in a nature corner.
2year olds love messy play, so gloop table would be just wonderful too.

Firstly,I appreciate your ideas to give a best room to your child that make him feel connected.I think you should start with proper theme because this is the place for growth of your kid.You can use themes like Nature - trees, grass, flowers or bugs, water or Something that inspires you like the seashore, a merry-go-round, the stars, etc.Try to keep it as simple as you can, keep less accessories in room and put few key toy items.
