This task explores the issues related to self-feeding.
This is LDC scenario:
Not another spill!
At Our Place Children’s Centre an Educator washes the floor at the end of morning play. The toddler children bring their own packed lunch and, unless it is raining, they eat lunch on mats spread on the verandah. The mats are stained with the remains of previous lunch times. An ice-cream container is placed in the centre of the mat for rubbish.
Some children have difficulty sitting cross-legged and there are frequent accidental spills. Some children put their food on the dirty mats while they have a drink. There is very little interaction or conversation. The Educators sit in a group on adult chairs a short distance away. They occasionally call out to a child who is deemed to be doing the ‘wrong thing’.

Identify 4 examples of poor practice from this scenario


What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
1. Educators not eating lunch with the children, and calling out to a child doing the “wrong” thing, rather than sitting with the children to eat, demonstrating correct eating habits.
2. More rubbish receptacles available to the children, strategically placed so they do not need to step over / through each other to get to the bin.
3. Mats not clean enough or hygienic enough for the children to be able to eat off them. Therefore, those children who spill their food onto the mat or place their food down whilst they have a drink are at risk of contaminating their food or drink.
4. Children should be sat at table with chairs to consume their lunch, rather than on a mat on the ground. This will lessen the instance of insects etc... crawling over during lunch time when they scent the food.

Hi All, I'm nearly completed this particular unit of assessment, however having not worked in an LDC for many, many years, I'm a bit stuck on this scenario. I've attempted to answer with as much common sense as possible, but I'm unsure as to whether these answer are 'correct' as far as the question is concerned. Any input is appreciated. :) Thanks!

I think the suggestions you made in poor practice fits the response well! :wave:

In regards to children sitting on tables and chairs rather than mats, it doesn't necessarily have to be as formal as table and chairs for lunch. Maybe the educators could provide one chairs as well so the children have an option of sitting on mats or chairs...
