Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: CHCRF301E Work effectively with families to care for the child
Your Assignment Type: Standard Question
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Beginner
Your Question?
For each scenario identify the barriers to effective two-way communication and a strategy to overcome the barrier.
1. Tran (3 yrs)
Tran’s mother has limited English skills and has had no previous experience with child care. In her country of origin only very wealthy families had access to child care. It was also considered extremely inappropriate for a parent to ask questions about the child’s care and education.
At morning tea Alice, a new graduate comments to her colleague, ‘You know I’ve never really spoken to Tran’s mother. She always looks away when I approach her.’ Her colleague responds, ‘Don’t worry, she’s always been like that. She’s either shy or thinks she’s better than us. I don’t even bother to try to talk to her anymore.’

2.Karik (3.6 yrs)
Carer: ‘Can I talk to you about something Karik’s mother said to me today? She complained that Karik is always dirty when she picks him up - paint or dirt on his skin or clothes. She said that if her friends or family saw him so dirty she would be ashamed. She wants me to stop him from painting or playing outside.’
Colleague: ‘Mmm, sometimes I think we forget that parents see things differently. Do you want to work out a solution?’

3. Amar (4.3 yrs)
Amar’s parents believe that many Australian children are very bold and disrespectful to their parents. They do not like the practice of children calling the carer by their first name. The parents worry that Amar was not required to show proper respect for his carers.

Strategies to overcome
4. Edwina (4 yrs)
Edwina was adopted through an overseas adoption agency in India. When she arrived in Australia at the age of 22 months she was extremely undernourished and underdeveloped. Although very small for her age, Edwina has made steady progress and is now functioning within the normal range for her age in all developmental areas with the exception of gross motor skills. Preschool is the first experience in out of home care for both Edwina and her doting parents. Her parents are very anxious that Edwina, who has very dark skin is not bullied or subject to racial taunts. They are also extremely anxious about supervision and safety practices and have requested that for the first few weeks Edwina be restricted to the verandah so that she can get used to being outside with so many children.
The parents have read the parent handbook and have requested copies of health and safety policies. They have also provided the carer with a great deal of background information on Edwina’s development and culture.
