Pass, Credit, Distinction

Post by Emerald447 » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:42 am

Hi! I am new here. I have now been doing my Diploma of Children's Services for about 5 weeks. We have been told, however, that the marks for credit and distinctions have been raised. Now, to qualify for a credit, you need a mark of 77, and an 88 for Distinction.

As unhappy as I am about this change, I am aiming to go to University after the course. I would like to know if any of you have received credits or distinctions? Do you study at home as well as do assignments? Do you refer to play theories and theorists in your assignments? Reference correctly? Good grammar and punctuation?

I am very interested in knowing how I can be at the top of my game.

Thank you.

Hi

Where are you doing your Diploma through? As far as I know for the TAFE diploma it is either competent or not competent. It doesn't really matter what marks you get as long as you get marked off as competent you will be able to get the uni credits off.

I received mostly distinctions during my Diploma! ;) I did my course by correspondence.

Good grammar, punctuation and referencing is important. As well as responding appropriately and answering questions with your understanding of the question. The main thing is that with all the assignments that you are doing your assessor wants to see how well you understand the context of learning, so writing responses in your own words is important.

At the beginning of each unit/module they should be giving you a guide such as a marking guide, that will explain what assessors are looking for, for each level such as pass, credit and distinction. if you include all details in your assignment from this, then you will get your distinction.

Also when going to uni, they don't care whether you got a distinction or just a pass. They just need to see what modules you have completed...

Good Luck,

That is very strange. That was the emphasis on the course when we started it after the Certificate 3.

Thanks for your reply! I have to admit, I still may want to get those extinctions just for me :)

This may be a dumb question but if you pass with a distinction does it say that on the actual diploma that you recieve? Or when you apply for a job do you just tell the employer that you passed with distinction? Does it make any difference when applying for jobs is what I am really trying to say.

Hi JNP
I'll chime in and say I've not seen distinctions mentioned on the actual Diploma perhaps they're on the transcript that accompanies the qualification.
And no I do not believe distinction or no distinction would affect job prospects in any way.
In my Diploma, the marking scale was " not yet competent, competent,or exceeded "
Quietly proud to say I " exceeded" all my units- which is same as a distinction.
It's not worth getting concerned about- far more applicable in a university degree.

Oh I see! It's just that I have actually passed all of my units with a High distinction and I thought that it would be acknowledged somehow...Now I feel like I should not have put so much effort in.
Oh Well!!!

When I did uni there was a saying 'P's get degrees' basically meaning you only have to get a pass on your assignments and exams and you will get your degree, which essentially was right. However, I felt I needed to challenge myself and I really enjoyed aiming high. It didn't show on my degree or anything so I suppose it was more for my own satisfaction more than anything B-)

I understand what you are saying cathiek, I have learnt so much by doing the diploma and always do my best. I am actually proud of what I have achieved. I think I am just getting a bit over it. Studying, working, family committments.. I'm sure you know what I mean. I am doing the last unit now and still have some observation homework to do from the previous unit. I'm struggling to keep up with it all. I am feeling exhausted and just want to hand in my work quickly to get it over with. Some of the other students in the class are saying it doesn't matter what you get, as long as you pass and I think this attitude is rubbing off on me.
Anyway, I'm hanging in there...I keep thinking only 1 more unit...
Jules.

As you say JNP - hang in there, the end is in sight. You can completely fall apart soon ( I know I did!!) Trust me, all the extra learning you have done, for your own satisfaction, will come in handy. You may even find when you finish that after a break you want to do more study EEEKK!
Good luck with the final units.
