Your Assignment Type: Other

Your knowledge: Beginner
Your Question?
A child’s personality, attitude and determination have an impact on how they approach and work through each crisis. How educators respond to each child also has a significant impact on how they resolve their individual crises.

Research Erikson’s theory of Psychosocial Development, and make sure that you understand his four stages of development, before attempting the following task.
1. Scenario:
Jessica is Nived’s educator. She carries him frequently. As she goes about her daily routine, she tells him what she is doing and talks to him softly. She strokes his head and hair, smiles and makes eye contact with him often. He smiles backs and coos happily.
When he starts to whimper and cry loudly, Jessica asks him, “Nived, are you tired?” She changes his nappy, singing softly, and his crying becomes less urgent.
She places him in the blanket, which he brings from home. Jessica takes her time leaving him, she makes sure that he is settled, that the environment is suitable, she sets a musical mobile above the cot, and says to Nived, “Night, night baby. Sleep well.” Jessica quietly leaves the room. Nived’s eyes follow her as she leaves, and then his eyes begin to shut, and he falls asleep. Jessica checks on him through the open door, a few minutes later.
a) Which of Erickson’s four stages of psychosocial development applies to Nived?
b) Do you think Sanjay is displaying a sense of trust? Why or Why not?
c) Describe the actions that Jessica is doing to help/hinder that developing sense of trust?
2. Scenario:
Faith is playing basketball at an After School Care Service. It is her first time playing “proper” basketball. It takes her quite a few tries to get the ball in the hoop. The other children that she is playing with are more capable, and most of them are able to get the ball in the hoop in three or four shots. “Oh well,” Faith says to herself, “I guess I’m just not good at basketball.”
Jeannie, an Educator at the centre, says to Faith, “Keep it up Faith, you’re doing good. Just keep you eye on the hoop and bend your legs when you shoot at it. You’ll get the hang of it.”
A few of the other children start chanting, “Faith can’t get the ball in. She’s horrible at it.”
Faith thinks to herself, “I’ll show them! Practice makes perfect!” she perseveres throughout the game, coached Jeannie and her best friend Anastasia. By the end of the session, she’s can bounce the ball better and can even shoot some of them into the hoop. “I like basketball,” Faith says to Jeannie and Anastasia, “I’m going to see if mum and dad can buy me a hoop, so I can play more.”
a) Which of Erikson’s four stages of psychosocial development is relevant to Faith?
b) How would you interpret Faith’s behaviours? Do you think she is showing a desire to master a new skill? What evidence is there of this?
c) What is Jeannie (and Faith’s friend Anastasia) doing to help her develop a sense of achievement?
What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
