Observation Style: Language Style

Post by Felicia » Wed May 31, 2017 8:40 pm

Hi,

I am asked to write 9 different observation styles by observing 1 child.
- Anecdotal record
- Running record
- Learning story
- Time sample
- Event sample
- Socio gram
- Work sample
- Photo sequence
- Language specimen

I have went thru your different observation method and I think I am able to do 8 of the above except for Language Specimen. Could you assist on this, where can I view samples on Language Specimen.

Regards,
Felicia Vargis

Hi Felicia,

Here this may help:

A specimen record is similar to a running record but focuses on one area of development. For example, if you were observing language development – you would record a bit of the context, but the focus would be on the conversation. When writing a specimen record you need to identify which area of development you are focussing on e.g. Specimen record – language development.
