Hi All,
I have this to do for my health and safety subject involving menu planning. We had to find out the amount of servings for each of the food groups for 4 - 8 year olds. I found the answer quite easily except for the extra foods. Im not sure what that is and cant seem to find the answer from the site we were told to use. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Total Servings per day for 4 – 8 year olds, as recommended from
Eat For Health Brochure
- National Health and Medical Research Council
Fruits - 1 ½
Grains and Cereals - 4
Vegetables - 4 ½
Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes 1 ½
Dairy - 2
Extra foods - ???? What would be considered extra foods?? And how much are they allowed to have??

Re: Health & Safety Cluster - Menu planning
Extra foods would probably refer to foods for individual children based on their special diets, allergies, etc that need to be purchased as "extra" as their meals would be slightly different to the ones you are providing in order to meet their required nutrients.
For example: A strict vegetarian meal plan will require the addition of extra foods to provide the required nutrients.
Hope this helps,

Re: Health & Safety Cluster - Menu planning
I thought if they were vegetarian for example, there were options within the food groups for them. Therefore i thought perhaps 'Extra food' referred to things like oil, butter, spreads, etc?
