CHCIC510A - Observing Disruptive Behaviour Using Different Formats

Post by gillespie8 » Wed May 30, 2012 12:32 pm

hi i am having trouble understanding this first question

choose a child in your service who is currently exhibiting a behavior that is considered to be disruptive or harmful. over a period of time using a variety of observation tools (please help understand what kind of tools? different obs formats?) make 6 observations of the child presenting this behavior. when making these observations make sure you ask yourself the following questions:
what internal or external forces appear to be prompting this behavior?
what do you know about the child life at the moment that may be prompting this behaviour?
what aspect of the childs current stage of development could be impacting on the type of behaviour being presented?
are there any aspects of the centres environment, routines, other children or adults impacting on the child behaviour?

i dont understand it says to ask myself those questions but does that mean i have to include those questions into the observation or do i have to make up an observation template and include those questions in it? im so confused of what types of observation tools to use :(

if you could help me understand that would be great. thank you

You have to do your observations on the child, then you get your answers from there. you need to identify what behaviour it is.

Using a variety of observation tools, I think it means doing observations during routine times, different settings, like home corner, during group activities.

Look at the age of the child? Look at their family back ground etc. Look at what triggers the child's behaviour. Could it be because of lack of space? too many children in one place. Maybe the child and carer have not established a positive relationship. Maybe the child feels uncomfortable or has lack of trust for the carers.

Look at the environment, indoor, is it too dark, not much air ventilation, also look at colours. Some children don't like bright colours, and too many hanging from the ceilings.

observation tools, not too sure about that. maybe it means, observes the child's strengths and needs. look at the child's gross and fine motor development, cognitive skills, language skills etc

Children misbehave because of lack of language skills. They don't know how to talk. So the only way for them to respond is by communicating non verbally, being aggressive. so in this way, we need to guide the child's behaviour in a positive. if another child grabs a toy from them, the child cries, we need to tell the child to say STOP. just simple words for them to learn.

I hope this helps.
