CHCCS400C - Scenario: Giving Only Juice To A Toddler

Post by Eilleen » Thu Jun 11, 2015 2:53 pm

What is your role in this situation

A parent tells you not to give her 13 month old baby any milk only juice. A co-worker gives the child milk. The co-worker also says the mother is cruel and not to mention it

My answer was
My role in this situation is to make sure the child is looked after and respect the mother’s wishes and not to give milk to the child only juice. Once I realised that the co-worker had given the child milk explain the reasoning behind it. Also suggest to the co-worker that they should not be nasty with such comments.

Comments relating to this from lecturer was "Is this the educator decision to make" and "what would you do before pickup" and also asking for the reference to the juice. Please tell me what are they asking I have no idea.
Please help

First you need to mention to the parent that you can only offer water to the child since your centre has a policy on not offering juice since it is "sugar sweetened". Since the educator gave the child milk, you will need to report it and fill in an incident form and make the parent aware of the incident that took place. The educator should be made aware that it is the mothers decision not to give milk to their child and shouldn't jump to conclusions as to why. The educator should also apologise to the parent and reassure her that all staff have now be informed and a notice in the meal area has been put up about her child not having milk at the centre and the incident will not happen again.

Hope this helps,
