This is the scenario:
Sarah, aged four years, has mild cerebral palsy and has recently begun attending your service. Sarah is cognitively of a similar level to her peers. She wears callipers on her legs, so moves more slowly than the other children and requires close supervision outdoors on uneven ground. Sarah is not fully toilet trained yet and has occasional toileting accidents. You notice that a number of children have not been including Sarah in their play. Children aren’t using a discriminatory reason. They say, “We don’t want anyone else playing”. You decide to pursue the matter further and later have the opportunity to question the children in more depth. The children’s responses reveal misconceptions about Sarah and her needs and abilities. A parent has expressed concerns to you regarding the extra demands on staff’s time due to the inclusion of Sarah in the group. This parent feels that their own children are missing out on some of the attention which they rightly deserve and that Sarah’s ‘odd’ behaviours are a bad influence on the children. Another staff overhears the conversation and joins in. She replies “Yeah it’s really hard for the other kids. They hardly get any time with the staff now she has started’.
