Can I get some assistance please. I am confused because I feel like the child is disengaged if the other children's attempts to interact are going unnoticed
You are Lead Educator in the room catering for children aged 2-3 years old. You are approached by one for the children’s parent who has concerns that when asked, her 2 year old child doesn’t do anything all day and doesn’t have any friends. The parent wants to know what her child is doing all day and why she doesn’t have any friends.
You take particular note of what activities the child is participating in and notice through your observations that a great deal of time is spent in solitude however is moving around the space quite confidently. You also note that the child is not distressed or disengaged and other children’s attempts to interact are going unnoticed.
How would interpret these observations and how would you communicate this to the parent?
Can I get some assistance please.

Your child spends much of her day confidently exploring the space independently, engaging in solitary play without distress, though she often doesn’t notice other children’s attempts to interact. This is developmentally normal for a 2-year-old, and while she’s not yet forming friendships,Block Blast she’s active and content in her own way such as playing with blocks or moving around the room. I’ll gently encourage peer interactions during activities she enjoys and keep you updated on her progress, ensuring she feels supported at her own pace.

Would you like to explore strategies together that could support your child in forming friendships at their own pace?

It's important to remember that at this age, children often engage in parallel play, where they play alongside other children without necessarily interacting directly. This is a normal stage of development. While she might not be actively engaging in group play all the time, she is still learning and exploring the environment around her.
